Space Shuttle Endeavour, The Last Night Time Blast-Off

The Space Shuttle Endeavour has made its final night time launch from the Kennedy Space Center on the East coast of Florida. The Space Shuttle is now on a 13-day mission to rendezvous with the ISS (International Space Station).

This was the final night launch for NASA , as there are only 4 more space shuttle missions after this one, with all of the remaining shuttle launches taking place in daylight hours.

Now that the Space Shuttle is in orbit, we will once again have a chance to get sightings of the ISS and Space Shuttle over Ireland. If you are up on Tuesday Morning at 6:20am you will see the space station cross the Irish skies and the space shuttle will only be 5 mins behind it crossing Ireland at 6:25am. The next time we see the ISS and Space Shuttle in the Irish skies, they will have docked and it will be a merged ISS+Space Shuttle which will be visible in the skies.

I have uploaded the times of the Space Station and Space Shuttle sightings for early Feb based on Sightings for Waterford, Ireland.

ISS & Shuttle Sightings for Ireland & UK

There are only a few more days that you can see the shuttle and ISS together, as the shuttle will soon depart the ISS and return home. The times of the next few sightings of the ISS and Shuttle are listed below. Interestingly the times that you can see the ISS are not much different in the UK than they are in Ireland. – Anyway, the dates and times for sightings listed below are for Waterford but should be valid for most of the south of Ireland. The way the weather has been recently I haven’t even caught 1 glimpse of the ISS. The next few sightings are in the early morning starting again in December.

Note – the ISS goes usually from South West to South South East and you will need a decent line of sight to the horizon.

There are only a few more Shuttle launches left before the Shuttle fleet retires … I think in 2010.

NASA Space Shuttle & ISS Visible over Ireland in November

The Space Shuttle and International Space Shuttle is visible over Ireland once again in November.

Space Shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to launch 16 November 2009 at 2:28 P.M. EDT  (Exactly 3 hours from now 7:28PM Irish Time, Monday 16th Nov) .  The Space Shuttle Atlantis has a crew of six and will travel to the International Space Station. The shuttle is expected to return to Kennedy Space Center on 27th November 2009.

I have outlined the dates the ISS and Shuttle are visible over Waterford for the month of November below.

The Shuttle will be first visible in Ireland at 5:54pm on Tuesday, fairly high in the south skies coming from WSW.

I’m hoping to get some rural areas where light polution is not an issue, in order to get some good shots of the ISS and Space Shuttle.

Shuttle and ISS Viewings for Ireland this week

Just checked on-line and to my disappointment there are no scheduled viewings of the ISS or Space Shuttle for Ireland this week (at least until 3rd August).

I use the NASA Human Space Flight (HSF) website at http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/ and for Waterford, Ireland the link is here (click). It was a pity about the weather over the past few weeks – we could have had some nice views of the space station and shuttle, but I am glad I saw the shuttle only minutes after take-off last week.

We might get to see the ISS again the week after !
