Launch of Shane McDonald PhotoBlog

Launch of Shane McDonald PhotoBlog

I have just launched a Photography Blog, I decided that although I use Flickr and Picasa for storing photos, I wanted something extra for displaying photos and discussing everything to do with Photography.

The link is www.shanemcdonald.me

Is it PhotoBlog or Photo Blog?

When doing my research I was curious to the naming – is it “Photo Blog” or “PhotoBlog”. Using Google Insights for Search and Google Trends I was able to see which was most used.

It turns out that PhotoBlog is a growing search term which is 2 or 3 times more popular than “Photo Blog”.

If you are doing SEO work and you have a photo blog then this information might be useful. The Google trends system is a great way to find out which term is more widely used and also if terms are growing or declining in search.

Hope you enjoy my site – still only a few posts on it but I hope to have at least 15 posts by the end of the year,

Meteorite Explodes over Ireland

At about 6pm today, a meteorite exploded over Ireland and was spotted from Cork to Donegal.

At 6pm on Wednesday 3rd Feb, emergency services all over the country received calls from people who said that there was an explosion in the skies over Ireland and that fiery debris was spotted falling from the skies. Smoke and heat trails were left in the skies for 10-20 minutes after the even as the ionised air was affected by the intense heat of the meteorite. Some people though planes had crashed and that the debris flying through the sky was aircraft engines.

People playing golf in Kerry reported it and at the same time people driving in Tullamore could see the same fire in the sky as the meteorite which would have been about 4 to 7 feet in size hit the atmosphere at hundreds of miles an hour. It would have broken into a few major bits as it fell to earth.

If anyone saw this they can place a “Fireball Report” on the Astronomy Ireland website, www.astronomy.ie and the search is now on for the pieces which fell to earth. Pieces of meteorite can sell for more than the price of gold. If you have pictures of the meteorite or video of the meteorite there are many media agencies, including RTE who are looking for spottings of the meteorite.

I have placed some YouTube Video of the actual Meteor which exploded in the skies below.

Unfortunately, I was driving south at the time and didn’t see a thing!!

Clouds in South East block view of ISS and Shuttle

The Thursday pass of the International Space Station and Space Shuttle have been blocked by rain and clouds. In the Waterford area, clouds blocked the 10:29 pass of the ISS which was to last 5 mins. The Space Shuttle passed at 10:59pm but by this stage it was raining – so total disappointment. I had the tripod and camera all ready to capture this but thanks to the great Irish Summer, it was not to be.

The following are the dates and times for the next viewings of the Space Station and Space Shuttle for Waterford and south east of Ireland ;
ISS : Fri Jul 17/00:04 AM, Fri Jul 17/10:53 PM, Sat Jul 18/00:29 AM, Sat Jul 18/11:17 PM
Shuttle : Fri Jul 17/10:53 PM, Sat Jul 18/00:29 AM, Sat Jul 18/11:17 PM, Sun Jul 19/11:42 PM

If I get to capture a decent image of the ISS or the Space Shuttle as it passes over Ireland I will post it here.

Space Shuttle just flew over Ireland

Space Shuttle just flew over Ireland

The space shuttle has just flown over Ireland. I managed to get some shots on video and an 8 second timed exposure on film also. Have a look at the video of the shuttle flying over Waterford at 23:20pm on July 15th 2009 – only minutes after being launched from Florida.

Have a look at the still image (8 second exposure) below, not sure why there were 2 lights !!

Apparently this is one of the few times this has happened and it was amazing to see – the shuttle went very brightly and quietly from SSW to ENE – the whole event was finished in about 20 seconds. Absolutely Amazing.
