Nestled on the northern shores of the Firth of Clyde, Rhu and Helensburgh are two charming Scottish towns in Argyll and Bute that offer stunning coastal views, a rich maritime history, and a relaxing getaway just a short journey from Glasgow.

Rhu

The picturesque village of Rhu lies west of Helensburgh and is known for its scenic harbour, traditional cottages, and tranquil atmosphere. Once a thriving centre for shipbuilding and a favourite holiday retreat for Glaswegians in the 19th century, Rhu retains its maritime charm. The Rhu Marina is a hub for sailing enthusiasts, offering berths for boats and yachts with panoramic views of Gare Loch and the distant hills.

Visitors can enjoy coastal walks along the Three Lochs Way, which passes through Rhu, or take a gentle stroll through Rhu Churchyard, where several notable naval officers are buried. Nature lovers will appreciate the abundance of seabirds and the peaceful ambience. Rhu is ideal for those looking to escape the bustle of city life and immerse themselves in Scotland’s coastal serenity.

Helensburgh

Just a few minutes’ drive east, Helensburgh offers a vibrant contrast to Rhu with more shops, cafes, and cultural attractions. Founded in the late 18th century, the town quickly became popular with wealthy Glaswegians building grand villas along the Clyde. One of the most famous of these is Hill House, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Now managed by the National Trust for Scotland, the house showcases Mackintosh’s distinctive architectural style and innovative interior design.

The town’s wide, tree-lined streets are perfect for exploring on foot. The Helensburgh Pier and esplanade offer lovely walks with views across the Clyde, while the waterfront is dotted with cafes and ice cream shops. During the summer months, the area becomes a hotspot for kayaking, sailing, and paddleboarding.

Hermitage Park, with its landscaped gardens, duck pond, and play areas, is perfect for families, while local galleries and craft shops cater to lovers of art and design. For those interested in naval history, the nearby Faslane Naval Base and the museum at Garelochhead offer insights into the region’s strategic maritime role.

I highly recommend the Rhu Inn at 49 Gareloch Rd, Rhu, Helensburgh G84 8LA – the hotel is quaint and may seem like an unlikely recommendation but the staff and the food are excellent.
