Things to Do in Edinburgh: A Journey Through History, Politics and Natural Beauty

Edinburgh is a city that effortlessly blends old-world charm with modern vibrancy, making it a perfect destination for curious travellers. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or someone who enjoys peeling back the layers of a city, Scotland’s capital has something to captivate you. Up until 2024 I had never been to Edinburgh , now it is one of my favourite cities. As far as I am concerned, 1 week here is about right if you want to see everything. There is something here to suit everyone.

A great way to start your adventure is with a city tour. Walking tours are especially popular here, as Edinburgh’s compact streets are brimming with stories. From the cobbled Royal Mile to hidden closes and courtyards, knowledgeable local guides bring the city’s colourful history to life. If you prefer a broader view, hop-on hop-off bus tours are a relaxed way to orient yourself while enjoying Edinburgh’s stunning skyline. We did the city ghost tour and the Mary King Close tour, both of which were excellent. The Mary King Close tour really showed what the city was like hundreds of years ago.

No visit would be complete without the climb up Arthur’s Seat, the ancient volcano that rises proudly above Holyrood Park. Some guidebooks would tell you that the hike isn’t overly strenuous, and it is not too bad, however, when we were doing it, it was the height of summer and the temerature of 25C certainly changes the hike – so bring water and take breaks on the way up. Plus, the sand on the climb is slippy at times I we saw 3 or 4 people take tumbles, nothing serious, on the way. At the summit you’re rewarded with sweeping views across the city, the Firth of Forth, and beyond. It’s the perfect spot for a sunrise start or a leisurely afternoon stroll, and it offers a reminder of just how close nature sits to Edinburgh’s historic heart. The route from Arthurs Seat can then bring you back towards the city for a full walking loop.

For something more modern, step inside the Scottish Parliament building. This was something new for us, as I had never been inside any parliament. Opened in 2004, its striking contemporary architecture contrasts beautifully with the medieval surroundings. Free guided tours provide an insightful look at Scotland’s political life, from debates in the chamber to exhibitions on national decision-making. It’s a fascinating glimpse into how Scotland governs itself today. The tour was 10 mins, was free and you just need to ask inside for details. Note, you will have to do a full security check before you are admitted (almost like an airport)

And of course, what visit to Edinburgh would be complete without visiting the castle. Towering over the city is the magnificent Edinburgh Castle. Perched on Castle Rock, it has watched over the city for centuries. Inside, you’ll discover the Crown Jewels of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, and the atmospheric Great Hall. Time your visit with the firing of the One O’Clock Gun for an extra slice of tradition. Twice we tried to visit but tickets do sell out so buy them well in advance !

One final note, the food in Edinburgh is phenomenal! From Chinese to Indian and everything in between. We have a few favourite restaurants here now including The Way Taste, Wu Zhen of China and Kolachi – Desi Street Food ; all these can be acccessed via Clerk Street and all are 5 Star reviews on my Google Maps.
