Hotel Review of Elysees Mermoz Hotel, 30 Rue Jean Mermoz, Paris

There seems to be a Joe Bonamassa theme about some of our hotel visits and this one is another. This time we were going to the Paris concert in April 2012 and booked the Hôtel Élysées-Mermoz or Elysees Mermoz Hotel based on good Booking.com scores and hotel reviews. It was also just 15-20 minutes to the music venue, The Rex.

The Elysees Mermoz Hotel is about a 5-minute walk from the Champs Elysee and nearest Metro stop. There are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby so you are really at the heart of Paris here. The Elysees Mermoz is a very nice, bright and modern hotel with very friendly staff who speak good English, even though I did my very best in French but to a point. (It always takes me a few days to get my French into gear, but the effort is worth it)

The rooms at the Hotel are spacious for Paris (as I have stayed in some Paris hotels which were tiny) and with a very nice compact bathroom. The bathroom featured excellent products and a great power shower.  One of the nice touches was Free WiFi – I feel that in this day and age any hotel these days not offering Free WiFi normally won’t get my business!!

The beds are very comfortable and you will get excellent sleep here, which is important if you are out all day walking the streets of Paris. We chose not to avail of breakfast on this occasion as we prefer to find local restaurants for a more authentic Parisienne morning experience.

As it happened I actually left something at the hotel and they managed to get it back to me in Ireland. I thank the staff and management of the hotel for that kind act.

The Hôtel Élysées-Mermoz is certainly a hotel which I will come back to for my next stay in Paris, not only for its great central location and friendly staff but also for the comfort and luxury of the accommodation in the heart of Paris.

Where is the Fairmont Hotel Singapore located?

Fairmont Hotel Singapore, 80 Bras Basah Rd

The Fairmont Hotel Singapore is ideally located in a central part of town, only 15 minutes walk from the bustling Clarke Quay. Its central location means that it is situated very close to all major entertainment and shopping districts, plus, there is even a multi-storey shopping mall within the Fairmont Hotel complex.

The Fairmont Hotel Singapore offers 769 luxurious guestrooms and suites, a collection of 16 distinctive restaurants and bars.

Check-In

On check-in, we got a complimentary mango juice, which was very welcome after the 11-hour flight from London. Your bags are brought to the room 5 minutes after check-in, with the porters calling me ‘Sir Shane’ (which was nice).

The heat and humidity in Singapore can make you feel quite uncomfortable, but the Fairmont Hotel is very well air-conditioned and you feel very comfortable indeed. At no point in the hotel did we feel that the humidity or heat was getting to us.

Our Room

The guest rooms are luxurious with a comfortable bed, luxury bathroom and aromatherapy bath products. Our room came with a balcony and the views are stunning from the tower we were in. From the 22nd floor, you have a view of Singapore which looked over Singapore Bay, with stunning views of the Singapore Flyer, the amazing Marina Sands Hotel and views towards the city centre. The featured photo above shows the view by night with the lights of Singapore.

Breakfast

Breakfasts are served in three different restaurants but we found that the Asian Market Café was the best, as it had a large selection of foods from typical continental breakfast fare to Chinese / Asian steamed dumplings (which I had a good few of as they were very tasty).

The breakfasts are an experience to be savoured. You can if you wish to go for the normal breakfast, croissants, bagels, bread, cereal but the Asian breakfast is very special. It was the first time I tried steamed buns, and I have been hooked ever since.

Other Facilities at the Fairmont Singapore Hotel

In addition, guests of Fairmont Singapore have access to the Willow Stream Spa, one of the largest spa facilities in Asia, offering the best in Spa and Fitness services. The Spa Treatments at the Willow Stream are very reasonable and the facilities and therapists are excellent. I tried the massage, and as you overlook the city from 10 or 20 storeys up, you soon forget your troubles. The massage was excellent and any knots I had were soon eased.

The concierge staff at the hotel were also excellent and most friendly – they helped us book a city tour of Singapore as well as organising for our luggage to be held while we awaited our trip back to the airport. The staff were friendly and very helpful at all times.

Premier Inn, Dartford – Hotel Review : Kent Hotel Review

Premier Inn, Dartford – Hotel Review : Kent Hotel Review

Having booked tickets to see the excellent Derren Brown in Concert at Dartford’s Orchard Theatre, I was looking for a nice hotel to stay during my visit. The Premier Inn Dartford was a great choice.

On arrival at the Premier Inn Dartford we were welcomed and check-in was quick and painless. The staff were very nice and we had a nice chat with them before heading to the room. The Premier Inn Dartford has 60 rooms, is nicely decorated and located beside a Beacon Beefeater restaurant if you are hungry. The rooms are nicely decorated with air conditioning, spacious bathroom and the most excellent showers. The only problem we found was that if you are looking for some fresh air – the windows do not open which I didn’t like. The beds are very comfortable and a good nights sleep is guaranteed (as per Lenny Henry).

The Premier Inn Dartford is situated close to the Dartford crossing (which is a tolled crossing) enabling easy access north and south. All rooms air conditioned, you get 30 minutes Free WiFi (which is very little and 2 or 3 hours would be nice) and site offers free parking.

This hotel is one which I would return to, the staff are very nice and the stay was enjoyable even if a little short.

Future Inn Hotel Bristol – Bristol Hotel Review

Future Inn Hotel Bristol – Bristol Hotel Review

Future Inn Hotel, Bristol – Review

I visited Bristol in June as part of a trip around the south west of the UK. Bristol was day 2 of the trip, so naturally, I didn’t want to leave it to fate. Therefore via the Booking.com app, I researched hotels in Bristol. The Future Inn Hotel in Bristol had a good profile and good reviews, so I booked a 2-night stay here.

On arrival in Bristol we found the Future Inn Hotel and having parked in the short-term car park at the rear we checked in.
It was a very efficient and friendly check-in. We were advised as to where the actual car park was (shared with the Cabot centre) and a 3-minute walk back to the hotel. Parking was later validated which was excellent and added to the great value during the stay at the hotel.

The room was very nice, very good air conditioning (which was welcome during the summer of 2013) and a nice bathroom with an excellent shower and products. The comfortable room also had a nice street view but very little street noise which was good. No noise either from adjoining rooms or corridor which can often be annoying.

The breakfast was not included in my rate, so at an extra charge, I asked that it be charged to the room. It was well worth it; a well-organised buffet with very nice food, including a wide selection of cooked meats, pastries, cereals and fruit. Certainly enough to get you started for your day.

There is free WiFi available in public areas in the hotel but alas not in the room – that would have added to the hotel’s features. This was the only downside to the visit, as, for me, Wifi is something I need in a hotel.

Overall a very pleasant and comfortable stay and would certainly return if I was ever in the Bristol area again.

Carraig Hotel, Carrick-On-Suir, Review – Carraig Hotel

Carraig Hotel, Carrick-On-Suir, Review – Carraig Hotel

In the past, I have found that in Ireland, especially hotels in smaller towns can sometimes be a bit basic. This is not always the case but more often than not the finer touches are missed. Either the food is not to write home about or the ambience is non-existent…

I visit the Carraig Hotel in Carrick-on-Suir every 2 weeks as part of a photography group. As a result, I often end up having food, drinks and have also attended functions in this location. The Carraig Hotel is a modern hotel which has been recently renovated. It has great food, a very bright and lively bar with extra touches like free WiFi and Sky Sports & piped music through-out the bar area. There is always a good buzz, some lively chat or nice music.

I have eaten here a good few times now and every time it is very good quality. Over the past few months, I have tried everything from a mini-grill, curry or Chicken Maryland to traditional cod & chips, burgers and wraps. My favourite is the duck spring rolls – delicious. The food is very good value too. The food is not fussy or pretentious, it is good honest food which tastes good. I’m not looking for Michelin quality or AA rosettes but when I order food, I want to enjoy it and have enough food for my needs. Also, if I feel that I could cook what I got at home then I would consider this as not being worth my money – at no point does the Carriage fall under these categories. Good food, good portions and a very tasty menu.

The Carraig Hotel is also great as a venue for functions, with plenty of room for all.
