About Somebody to Love
Somebody to Love is from Queen’s 5th studio album, A Day at the Races. The album was released on 10th December 1976 and this was the band’s first completely self-produced album. The album continues the theme of the previous and almost acts in parallel with A Night at the Opera. Both albums took their names from Marx Brothers films, as well as sharing similar album artwork and having a similar musical style. A Day at the Races went to Number 1 in the UK, Japan and the Netherlands album charts and it reached No. 5 in the USA.
Somebody to Love is actually one of my favourite songs, and it is progressing well in my online Queen polls (if you want to the a look, click here). Somebody to Love was written by Freddie Mercury and has the complex harmonies of Bohemian Rhapsody with a gospel feel to it. It reached No. 2 in the UK charts, held off the top spot by Under the Moon of Love by Showaddywaddy in the first week and then dropped a place tp No.3 as When a Child is Born by Johnny Mathis moved towards Christmas top spots. Apparently Freddie Mercury‘s fascination and admiration for singer Aretha Franklin was a major influence for the creation of Somebody to Love. The song was played live on 20 April 1992, during The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, sung by the amazing and much missed George Michael on lead vocals – released as Somebody to Love Five Live. The song has also been covered on American Idol, The X Factor, Glee and Gossip Girl, as well as being included in movies, including Happy Feet.
