About Freddie Mercury

Farrokh Bulsara was born on Thursday, 5th of September 1946 on small African spice island of Zanzibar, to parents Bomi and Jer Bulsara. His early school years were spent away from the family as he attended a boarding school in Bombay. Freddie’s father Bomi, was a British diplomat, so they were often moving from one location to another. In 1954, aged only 8 years, Freddie started to attend British College School, St. Peter’s in Panchgan. At this time his schoolmates started to call him by the more English name of Freddie. The school was typically British and in sports Freddie was very strong in boxing and in table tennis, winning many trophies and medals. Freddie also loved art and music and showed great talent in both areas; playing the piano and performing in school shows and also joining the school choir. Freddie, with the encouragement of the headmaster of the school, did piano lessons and applied himself to them very well achieving Grade IV in both practical and theory. In 1958, five friends at St Peter’s School formed a rock’n’roll outfit called ‘The Hectics’ – the members were Freddie Bulsara, Bruce Murray, Derrick Branche, Victory Rana and Farang Irani (Freddie was the piano player in the band). They played at school parties, at annual events and school dances.

Happy Birthday Brian May

Brian Harold May

Brian Harold May was born on 19th of July 1947 in Hampton, Middlesex, in the UK. Brian attended primary school in Feltham during which time he showed an interest in music and his parents registered him for piano lessons, which Brian actually hated. When Brian was six years old he started learning to play the ukulele. Brian got very good very quickly and soon he wanted a guitar. A Spanish guitar was given to him as a birthday present, but it was too big for him, so he went and modified it. With his newly built guitar Brian was listening to, and accompanying records which he played. He quickly moved from playing chords to more advanced details. As the time went on and as he played the existing guitar he discovered, that his guitar wasn’t good enough to play music he liked.

Flash Harry – Queen Tribute Band

Flash Harry – Queen Tribute Band

Flash Harry are one of the best Queen Tribute bands. I recently saw them at the Academy in Dublin and they rocked the place. They played Queen hit after Queen hit for over 2 hours. My voice was hoarse from all the singing. Plus, as far as I could see the songs were not transposed for ease of singing – the lead singer was simply “doing a Freddie”!

Love Queen. Grew up listening to them as my parents were fans. To answer your question… My fave tune by them is ‘Tie Your Mother Down’.

Amazing – Bohemian Rhapsody turned into a noir crime thriller

Amazing – Bohemian Rhapsody turned into a noir crime thriller

Over the years many have asked, What is Bohemian Rhapsody really about? What does Bohemian Rhapsody mean? What is the story behind Bohemian Rhapsody? Well now someone has created a Bohemian Rhapsody Noir Crime Movie , basically a crime drama out of the classic Queen song.

This amazing short from Corridor Digital brings a brand new perspective on the ‘What is Bohemian Rhapsody about’ saga. This short file takes the lyrics and puts them in the hands of a ‘poor boy from a poor family’ who ‘killed a man’. You know the rest of the story! It is quite a production and the Bohemian Rhapsody Noir Crime Movie is only a short snippet so don’t go looking for a 90 minute Netflix piece.

Even though I know the lyrics really well, seeing them in this format is intriguing.

I have my own ideas about What does Bohemian Rhapsody Mean, especially after watching the official Biopic / Bohemian Rhapsody Movie. I will keep my ideas to myself and you can enjoy this snippet in the YouTube clip below.

Take a look and see what you think. Any comments on this Bohemian Rhapsody Noir Crime Movie, leave them below !

(Apologies for weird advert at the end of the film, but is seems to be part of the clip)

What Queen songs do you want to learn? Learn Queen Songs

What Queen songs do you want to learn? Learn Queen Songs

Do you want to Learn Queen Songs? I will soon launch a Learn to Play Queen section on Shane’s Queen Site, so I’m asking visitors to the site the question “What songs do you want featured on this section?” – If you want to Learn Queen Songs which are the ones you really want to play on piano?

I am taking a shortlist via comments / Tweets or Facebook comments until the new year and after that I will go from there.

If you want to see a certain song featured on the site, so that you can watch and learn to play on Piano or keyboards, please comment your choice below.

The Queen back catalogue is huge, so I will be choosing the shortlist based on its difficulty, how many people want to Learn that Queen Song and also the likelihood that other would be interested in it. In the meantime don’t forget to check out the Queen Chords and Tab section of the site which already has chords to many Queen songs.

Lets make “These are the Days of our Lives’ the Christmas No. 1

Lets make “These are the Days of our Lives’ the Christmas No. 1

Did you know it is 25 years since the song These are the Days of our Lives was released in the USA on 5th September 1991 – Freddie’s last Birthday as he died only a few weeks later. It was then released as a double A side single on 9th December after Freddie’s death and Bohemian Rhapsody became the first song in history to claim the Christmas number one slot twice (with the same version … Live Aid did it with 2 different recordings). So maybe this year it will be Christmas No. 1.

This year marks 25 years of this great song, 25 years since Freddie’s death and if he was still with us, he would be 70

Shane Queen Site Redesign – Site gets a brand new look

Shane Queen Site Redesign – Site gets a brand new look

Queen Site Redesign

After a lot of hard work, my Queen site redesign is finished and the site has had its makeover. The Queen site was originally set up in 1999 as a 4-page static website. Over the next 5 years, the Queen site grew to about 20 pages with a few tabs on the site. In 2004 the site got a new server on queen.shanemcdonald.org and it was extended to over 100 pages. Back in those days, all the pages were coded by hand, there was no such thing as content management software or WordPress.

As time went on the site was managed and updated fairly regularly until about 2011 when I updated the site when I could. Then in June 2013, Google started introducing SEO penalties for sites which were not mobile compliant – which mine was not. Therefore I knew I had to update the site.

I started work in May 2016, getting the site architecture mapped out and trying to create a design with worked for the site. I was hoping to launch the site prior to 24th Nov but it would not have looked as well as possible.

I hope you enjoy the new Queen Site Redesign and if you have any comments or suggestions please feel free to make a comment or drop me an email.

I hope to include a number of new sections such as a full Queen album discography, a list of Queen Tribute Bands, a full list of relevant Queen links such as fan sites and social media groups. The Queen polls and the interactive nature of Shane’s Queen Site will also be addressed, as these will be reintroduced to the site.

If there are any elements of the website which you, as a Queen fan, would like to see, please do let me know.

Thanks for visiting Shane’s Queen Site

The Queen Extravaganza European Tour

Queen Extravaganza European Tour

Following the recent success of the recent UK and North American tours, the Queen Extravaganza European Tour will visit certain European cities starting in May 2014.

The Queen Extravaganza European Tour will take Queen’s glorious music and live stage experience to a brand new generation of Queen fans … as well the the die hard Queen fan.

The Queen Extravaganza band includes musicians selected via a unique online talent search (but which you couldn’t enter if you were living in the UK … much to my personal annoyance). Anyway, the band is made up of vocalist Marc Martel who has an amazing voice and can do a “Freddie”; guitarist Nick Radcliffe; drummer Tyler Warren; bassist Francois-Olivier Doyon; and keyboardist Brandon Ethridge (who if he wants to resign, I will take his place at a drop of a hat!).
