Wednesday’s Child: The Tribulation of Freddie Mercury

Wednesday’s Child: The Tribulation of Freddie Mercury is a memoir/commentary about the life of Freddie Mercury from the unique perspective of the author. More than thirty years after his death, fans remain intrigued by the mysteries that surrounded this iconic performer.

In this book, they will find the answers to the questions they seek and much more. They will finally know what the meaning of Freddie’s masterpiece “Bohemian Rhapsody” truly is (given by Freddie Mercury, himself). They will understand the karmic and spiritual dynamics of his relationships with the remaining members of Queen as well as the people in his inner circle of friends. The secret behind his unparalleled singing voice is revealed and most importantly, they will know Freddie’s true destiny and the internal struggles of his life and how he came to cope with them.

I am currently reading this book and my own personal review of Wednesday’s Child will appear on the website very soon. I would like to thanks the author of Wednesday’s Child: The Tribulation of Freddie Mercury, Holland Starke, for asking me to participate and review this new Queen related book.

Publisher’s Note

Wednesday’s Child: The Tribulation of Freddie Mercury is a must-read for any fan of Queen or Freddie Mercury. It is not about what we already know about Freddie; but what we do not about him, his private life and his destiny, as he kept the darkest of secrets in his heart. Everything that his fans, new and old, want to know about this mysterious performer is covered here and is certainly not for the faint of heart. Be prepared to laugh and to cry as you discover the man behind the mask.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Compelling, Shocking Read About The Greatest Front Man in History

I couldn’t put this book down. I thought this was just another biography of the rock icon, but this book delved much deeper into the man he was off stage. As a lifelong Queen and Freddie Mercury fan, I was always curious about his life story, including what made him the man he was. The author left no question unanswered. This is a very different kind of book about rock icons, and definitely not for the close minded.

This was a compelling read and I stepped away with a new understanding of my favorite rock

musician.

40 Years of Queen

40 Years of Queen

40 Years of Queen

The Anniversary publication ‘40 Years of Queen‘ is the first authorized book including an introduction by Brian May and Roger Taylor. This is a full and comprehensive history of Queen with photos and memorabilia some undeen until now. This 40 Years of Queen book was released in November 2011 the year of  their 40th anniversary. The book has been authored by UK music writer Harry Doherty who has been a music journalist since the early 70s. He has worked for Melody Maker, Metal Hammer, Hard n’ Heavy magazine and Classic Rock magazine.

Even now in 2020, as I write this review of 40 Years of Queen, 29 years after Freddie’s death, Queen is as big as ever. Bohemian Rhapsody the Movie was released only 18 months ago, with the film winning the most Oscars at the 2019 Academy Awards, the ‘We Will Rock You’ stage show and musical continues to thrill audiences around the world (resuming as soon as the Covid pandemic passes) and Queen and Adam Lambert continue to bring the Queen Back Catalogue to a new younger generation through their World Tour and charity concerts and online MicroConcerts via Instagram.

This ’40 Years of Queen’ publication is the first authorized Queen book. It tells the inside story of Queen and how their music changed rock music around the world forever. The Book features over 200 photographs, posters, pull outs and also removable memorabelia.

40 years of queen Book

When I originally opened this book I saw that in the inside cover there was a ‘pull out and keep’ full poster for the Queen concert at the Rainbow. I was chuffed, as I always wanted one. I felt this was a real bonus and it was a lovely touch. However, little was I to know that these surprises would continue.

Some of the further surprises in the 40 Years of Queen book include;

  • A4 poster for a Christmas Ball in 1973
  • Artwork, letters and a pull ou A5 photo from the first album
  • Pull our fan club letters from 1975
  • The Race Card from the Kempton Park race meet to promote “A Day at the Races
  • Hot Space promotional Cube which you can assemble
  • Hand Written Lyrics from The Works album
  • A long ‘Miracle’ Poster
  • and much more…

The book is a phenomenal journey through the history and music of Queen and really gives an insight into each album. I have only touched on what is in thos book but I think it is a must for every Queen fan. It can be hard to find but there are some listings on Amazon retailing from about £45 or you might try your luck in your nearest second hand book shop as you might get ’40 years of Queen’ for a lot less than you might think.

If you have read this book, ’40 years of Queen’ by Harry Doherty please send me your thoughts by email, tweet or instagram @shanesqueensite.

Queen Unseen

Queen related Book

From the Author of Queen Unseen, Peter Hince

Queen Unseen is a unique account of the many exciting years as a young man I spent on tour, in the recording studio, on video shoots and day to day life at home with one of the world’s biggest and best ever rock bands. It is an insightful, enlightening and mostly humorous account for anybody who has ever wondered what working for Queen, or indeed most rock bands of that era really entailed….. the highs and the lows. It is not a chronological history or definitive biography of the band, but a personal story of what it was like to spend your youth travelling the world and living the rock and roll lifestyle – to the full!

There is plenty of sex and drugs and rock and roll – as everybody knows that’s what happened….

I make observations and comments about all the fantastic places we visited and played, and what it was like living, at times, a crazy and surreal existence.

The book covers all the areas that were relevant in Queen’s working life, during my time as Queen’s longest serving roadie and head of their crew. There is lots of new material and surprises for Queen fans and it is a book to interest anybody who likes stories of rock and roll life in the 1970s & 1980s.

Mine is a truly unique book on Queen – no journalist or author could have written it – they were not there. I was, and I remember it all like it was yesterday…..
Wonderful memories.

There will be photo sections in the book that contain colour and black & white images from my successful Queen The Unseen Archive show that was exhibited in London and Australia recently. There will be additional rare and unseen photos and other images items of interest.

I hope you will join me on an Access All Areas journey through a magical era when we were young; feeling we could take on the world and win. Invariably we did.

Queen Unseen – My Review

Queen Unseen is an excellent book, a must for Queen fans. It is a very honest and blunt account of his life on the road with rock legends Queen.

Peter Hince was the head roadie with Queen from 1973 until 1984 (and a few times during the 1986 Magic tour). Queen Unseen contains a documentary of what happened behind the scenes at concerts, and the legends about those Queen parties (you find out if there were dwarves with cocaine on their heads), basically the book is a story of sex, drugs, and Rock and Roll…. not something I would have previously associated with Queen.

The book contains lots of humour with great anecdotes from the Queen tours. You get a real sense of the era and what was happening on stage, in the studio, and on the road. The book covers all the major concerts, including the USA, Latin America, Rock in Rio, and the controversial sun city gig. It is full of no holds barred, real experiences. The book was written with the blessing of the band and depicts what life on the road with Queen was really like.

If you are a Queen fan you will love this book for the detail and the fact that this book was written by somebody who was actually there. I have read so many books about Queen, written by people who have used interviews and hearsay, but this book is different. The one thing which struck me was that the book is not overly chronological as it flips between certain years to others but does so in a very interesting way. I actually read this book twice as there is so much in there, you get to soak up so much Queen information … it’s great.

There are some excellent Queen photos, many of which I have never seen before because they are from Peter’s own Queen photography collection.

Peter Hince pursued a photography career after the works tour and even took the great pretender cover for Freddie. He continues to work as a photographer and writer. If you love the early years of Queen you will love Queen Unseen.

Queen Unseen – Publishers Note

Imagine being alongside one of the greatest bands in the history of rock, touring the world, and being there as they perform at some of the best and biggest music venues in the world. Peter Hince didn’t have to imagine: for more than a decade, he lived a life that other people can only dream of as he worked with Queen as head of their road crew. In 1973, Queen was the support act for Mott the Hoople, for whom Peter was a roadie. Back then, Queen had to content themselves with being second on the bill and the world had not yet woken up to the flamboyant talent of Freddie Mercury. Peter started working full-time for Queen just as they were making A Night at the Opera, the album which catapulted them to international stardom. In this intimate and affectionate book, Peter recalls the highlights of his years with the band. He was with Freddie when he composed ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’; he was responsible for making sure that Freddie’s stage performances went without a hitch – and was often there to witness his famed tantrums! He was also party to the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll which are invariably part of life on the road with a rock band.

About the Peter Hince

Peter Hince met Queen as a teenager in 1973 when they were a support act to Mott The Hoople. Later he began working full-time for Queen during the recording of A Night at The Opera album and stayed with the band until their final concert in 1986. Head of Queen’s road crew, Peter then left the music business to start his career as a professional advertising photographer. He continues to work as a photographer and a writer.

Example Page from Queen: The Ultimate Illustrated History of the Crown Kings of Rock by Phil Sutcliffe - Book Review

It is very well put together and actually looks very expensive , as you can see from the example artwork shown, there is a great finish and style to the book. Some parts of the book have a scrapbook style (very well designed) in the way the Queen clippings are designed and laid into the book.

If you are a Queen Fan then you will certainly LOVE this book. It took me about 3 months to get through this book, which explains the delay in getting a full review onto the website.

This is a great book and is certainly one which would not be out of place in the “Lap of the Gods”.

I am, believe it or not, still reading this book there is so much in it, and I hope to expand on this book review in the coming months as soon as I have reviewed and read it in full. I will also upload some examples of the quality of this great book which would make a great gift for a Queen fan or just for yourself as a keepsake of the band which rocked generations.

The Book is “Queen: The Ultimate Illustrated History of the Crown Kings of Rock”, and it is written by Phil Sutcliffe.

Publishers Notes : Queen were renowned for stunning live performances, envied for rumors of their rock ‘n’ roll excess, and beloved for their music, occasionally anthemic and always virtuosic. Nearly twenty years after the death of their engaging and supremely talented front man, Queen remains the archetypal larger-than-life rock band, comfortably enthroned among rock royalty. Now, to celebrate the majesty of Queen’s contributions to rock, here’s the first-ever complete illustrated history of the band. With glorious concert and candid off-stage photography from throughout the band’s career, as well as concert posters, backstage passes, LPs and singles, and other memorabilia from throughout the world, this is the ultimate visual tribute to Queen. More than 500 photos and artifacts are accompanied by contributions from some of today’s top rock journalists from Europe and North America. In addition to a chronological history of the band, there are reviews of all studio albums, notable excerpts from period publications, complete year-by-year tour dates, and a discography, as well as reflections on the band and their music from many of rocks top performers past and present, including Slash, Tommy Lee, and Billy Squier. Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon combined a dizzying array of influences and genres in creating what would become one of the most compelling catalogs and lasting legacies in rock. Here is the book that dares to match that bombast…

The Ultimate Queen by Nigel Goodall, Peter Lewry
Hardcover: 256 pages
Publisher: Simon & Schuster UK
ISBN: 0684868377

The Ultimate Queen is an encyclopaedia about the best every rock band, “Queen”. The Ultimate Queen book contains over 3,000 entries and has been designed in a way that that informaiton in the book is in an easy to read format. The book contains Queen Band biographies and a chronology of important dates in the career of Queen such as concerts, single and album releases and video shoots. There is also information of Queen managers, Concert promoters and Queen tour personnel. You can also find some discussion of Queen concert tours, radio and TV appearances. Finally, you can find a full Queen Discography to make this a complete Queen discography (of course up until 1998).

This is a book which is sometimes hard to find online, often sold out, as it may by now be out of print. Since this book was published, we have had Queen+ Paul Rodgers, Queen+ Adam Lambert, the We Will Rock You musical (which started in 2002) and of course the much discussed Bohemian Rhapsody Movie. So a lot has changed and perhaps a reprint may be in order.

The Ultimate Queen is listed online as the biggest, and allegedly the most extensively researched enclyclopedia ever written about Queen. However there are quite a number of mistakes listed in the information within this book. It is understandable that mistakes may be printed, as research can be tricky to do, but in this case there are quite a few – perhaps there may be a second or revised edition of this Queen Encyclopedia Book.

The Complete Guide To The Music Of Queen by Peter K. Hogan
Paperback: 136 pages
ISBN: 0711935262

The Complete Guide To The Music Of Queen is a book my Peter K. Hogan aimed at guiding you through the music of the band Queen. The book is written in a style which reviews album by album Queen’s career, which, at the time of writing/compiling was around the 20 year mark. There is also a background to the group from the inception and pre-Queen/Smile era in 1971 the book details how the group Queen grew. The Complete Guide also outlines how, where and when the music was written and recorded. There is also a very good Queen Discography within this detailed Queen Book.

Amazon Reviews of this book

The reviews of this book are mixed with some even giving this book one star. The book covers the music of Queen track by track and album by album and there is some detailed analysis of such. If you are looking at a detailed biography and please don’t consider this book and also the information in this book has been published before in other Queen Books. Also, the last album covered in the book is Innuendo, the last album by Queen “Made In Heaven” was not included. The writing does take liberties, with punctuation, sentence structure and there are a few other gramatical errors which may annoy readers.

Authors Description

A consumers’ guide to the music of Queen which is an album by album run down of everything they recorded during their 20 year career. It includes: details of how the group was formed in 1971; information on when and where their music was written and recorded; a critical consumers’ guide to Queen’s back catalogue; a comprehensive Queen biography; and a complete discography.

Queen As it Began

Queen book

Queen As It Began by Jacky Gunn, Jim Jenkins
Paperback: 292 pages
ISBN: 0786880031

This was actually the first Queen biography I read. It is interesting and very easy to read. This book is an authorised and official biography of Queen. The rock group biography describes the band, it’s formation, its ups and downs and charts Queen’s flamboyant, stupendous and hit-making musical history. As it Began details each of the Queen band members and also writes about Freddie’s battle with AIDS. The book also features a very comprehensive Queen discography and videography. if you are someone who likes some visual history in your autobiographies then you won’t be disappointed as there are eight pages of really nice colour photos of Queen through the years.

Queen were undisputed rock royalty, and this book is excellent becuase it is an authorised and in some ways the official biography of the band. Queen seemed to define certain period of the glam rock era of the early 1970s and not only did they blossom during that ear, but they also changed with the times and outlasted all their glam-rock contemporaries. Queen’s music was varied to say the least, from the Rock exuberance of Bohemian Rhapsody and March of the Black Queen to the Vaudville style of Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon and Bring Back Leroy Brown, Queen rewrote the rules in the music business – even insisting that the record c ompaby release a six-minute mini-opera when radio stations were only ever playing 3 minute ditties. Queen As it Began is a book I have re-read a few times now and includes contents based on exclusive interviews with band members, the band’s families and friends. In my view should be the first book you read before you read the hear-say of other books.

Queen Book

Queen In Their Own Words by Mick St. Michael
Paperback: 112 pages
ISBN: 0711930147

There’s not very much available on-line about Queen In Their Own Words. The Author’s descriptive text about this Queen related book is as follows … “A compilation of quotations by the rock group Queen. They range from their early days to the Aids related death of singer Freddie Mercury in 1991.” Unfortunately that’s not a lot to go on and if you are publishing a book, perhaps having a descriptive paragraph rather than a one-liner might be a more apt promotional tool. I don’t actually own this book but I was lucky enough to find it in a book shop a few years ago and I do recall leafing through it. Not the most memorable of books but there were a few items which I thought were novel and new.

This 112 page book details the band’s formation through quotations and interviews from the early pre-Queen days of Smile and Larry Lurex, all the way through the formation of the band Queen and on to the later years of Innuendo an the untimely death of the Queen lead singer and front-man, Freddie Mercury.

Queen The New Visual Documentary by Ken Dean, Chris Charlesworth
Paperback: 48 pages
ISBN: 0711928282

Queen The New Visual Documentary, a detail by detail account of the career of Queen, now updated to include the death of Freddie Mercury on 24th November 1991. This is a very well written book and gets great reviews on Amazon (at the time of writing this review this had 92% of the 5 star reviews on Amazon).

I’m sure if you are a Queen fan that you might already have Queen books and Queen biographies, however this is one of those books which adds to your Queen collection rather than padding it with content which you already knew. I like this book for sure.  It is really well written and has a lot of great information about Queen and it is chronologically correct. One Amazon Reviewer said of this book, “Buy it! You won’t be disappointed!” and another reviewer said, “There are some great pictures and quotes, along with kind of an abbreviated history of the band. It concludes with a list of all of Queen’s music releases up until 1992. It is a beautiful book that is well worth the money. You will look at it again and again.

Purchasing Queen The New Visual Documentary

At the time of writing this review, the book is available in some formats on Amazon from around $10. I’m sure there are probably copies on EBay so not really arare book but certainly one which will be in demand due to the quality of the content and writing. If you have this book and you want to add your review please do email me or contact me on social media and I will be glad to add your review of the book.
