Bohemian Rhapsody – Start of 1975 Studio Recording celebrated

Start of 1975 Studio Recording of Bohemian Rhapsody is celebrated

On the 24th August 1975, Queen started recording the monster hit “Bohemian Rhapsody” at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales. This small recording studio is still running to this day. You may have actually seen the recreation of the recording of Bohemian Rhapsody in the Queen Biopic, the Bohemian Rhapsody Movie. The now classic Queen track was recorded over three weeks and released in October 1975. Queen singer Freddie Mercury had mentally prepared the song beforehand and directed the band throughout the sessions.

The whole band knew that this song was Freddies Baby – they referred to it as Freddies Thing and Freddie even referred to it in the early stages as the Cowboy Song. Brian May, Mercury, and Roger Taylor sang their vocal parts continually for ten to 12 hours a day, resulting in 180 separate overdubs (so much so, the tape was almost clear of oxide as it was used so much). You might recall the section of the Queen movie where Freddie asks Roger to ‘Go Higher’ and ‘One more’ … How many Gallileos do you need?

This is an extract from a really interesting article regarding this day in Music which was very kindly submitted by Neil Cossar. Click the link below to read more…

Be Freddie for a Day – Check out FreddieForaDay.com

Visit http://www.freddieforaday.com/ to find out what happens for the Freddie for a Day charity fund-raising event.

Freddie For A Day started when Liz Swanton raised over £1,200 by spending a working day dressed as Freddie back in the early ’90s. It was such a great fundraising idea that it was decided to make it an annual event coinciding with Freddie’s birthday which occurs on 5th September. Freddie for a Day is a fun, way to raise money for the Mercury Phoenix Trust charity which is spent fighting HIV/AIDS worldwide.

How do I get involved in Freddie for a Day?
What do I Wear for the Freddie For a Day event?
What do I need to do for Freddie for a Day?

All these questions are answered on the official Freddie for a Day Website at http://www.freddieforaday.com/

Freddie For A Day was the brainchild of Liz Swanton, web editor of the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the AIDS charity set up in Freddie’s name in 1992. In real life she’s a City of London Banker and she raised over £1,200 by spending a working day dressed as Freddie. It was such a wonderfully whacky idea that we decided to make it an annual event coinciding with Freddie’s birthday (5th September). It’s fun, it’s slightly crazy AND it raises money for the charity which is spent fighting HIV/AIDS worldwide.

Check out the Freddie for a Day Page for 2022

If you are running a Freddie for a Day event in 2022 then please visit this dedicated FFAD page for 2022 -> Click https://shanemcdonald.ie/queen/freddie-for-a-day_ffad/ for more details and you can submit your event and I will list it here for extra promotion of your event and hopefully extra fundraising for this amaing and worthy cause..

Innocent Smoothies feature a Fantastic New Advert using Flash’s Theme

This excellent new advert from Innocent Smoothies uses Flashs Theme, with “Fruit Aaah” instead of “Flash Aaah”. At the end of 2010 Innocent Smoothies started re-recording the Queen song ‘Flash’ for an advert for the smoothie company. The advert has a smoothie bottle in a cape flying around at high speed. The original sound of the Queen recording was achieved and apparently Reinhold Mack, the producer of the original recording was tracked down. Innocent used as many tricks to try recreate the sound of the Flash advert as much as possible, including using old microphones, using similar guitar amps to the original recording and a similar sized recording studio that Queen used to record Flash. The song was recorded over 2 days with engineer Niall Arcott recording and mixing the version for the advert. Some of the words in the song include “Fruit Aha, Saviour of the Universe”. The artists on the new advert recording include drummer Patrick Garvey, guitarist Adrian Curtis and pianist Angus Havers ; vocals were done by Keith Murrell and Chris Madin. You can hear the details and the final version of the advert below. Check out the You Tube version below Link – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QQHZTmbNgQ

Remembering Freddie Mercury

Remembering Freddie Mercury today 24th November

19 years ago today, on Sunday, November 24th, 1991, Freddie Mercury died peacefully at his home in London of AIDS related bronchial pneumonia. and today we are Remembering Freddie Mercury.

Freddie was cremated at Kensal Green Cemetery in accordance with his religion. Many stars from the world or music and showbiz attended the service, including friends Elton John and David Bowie.

We remember the legacy Freddie left in his music, concerts and camp / interesting interviews.

After such a traumatic event for the band the remaining members of Queen organized a tribute to Freddie and his work.. On April 20th, 1992 a tribute concert in Freddie’s memory was held at Wembley Stadium. Tickets to the gig sold out in a matter of hours, even before the full list of bands was available. Many of the worlds most famous rock stars took part in it. This concert was later released on DVD and video for all to enjoy, with the proceeds going to the Mercury Phoenix Trust.

Freddies music lives on in films, the stage show, the CDs which continue to sell in their millions and in a new generation of Queen fans.

Feel free to leave a comment if you wish! There are many media outlets Remembering Freddie Mercury, the interest in the Queen front man is higher than ever right now.

Freddie Wins in BBC TV Poll

Freddie Wins in BBC TV Poll

The results of the “I’m in a Rock ‘n’ Roll Band” TV Poll were announced by Jonathan Ross in a live TV broadcast last night. Freddie Wins in BBC TV Poll – The TV Poll was conducted under various categories such as Best Band, Best Singer, best Guitarist, Best Drummer, best Bassist and other relevant areas.

As could be expected Freddie Mercury won best singer but Queen lost out to Led Zeppelin in the Best Band category. I would have expected a UK based TV show to have a UK slant on the voting results. Therefore I expected to see Brian May as Best Guitarist and Queen as the Best Band. When I studied the nominees for Best Guitarist, Bassist and Drummer none of our Queen friends were even nominated in the BBC TV Poll.

The results were as follows …

Best Band – Led Zeppelin
Best Singer – Freddie Mercury
Best Guitarist – Jimi Hendrix
Best Drummer – John Bonham
Best Bassists – Flea

Brian May upset over Queen “Don’t Stop Me Now” in pro-hunting video

Brian May is fuming over the use of Don’t Stop Me Now in a pro-hunting video in Britain. Brian has for years campaigned for wildlife programmes including foxes, hedgehogs and badgers.

Don’t Stop Me Now can be heard over the video promoting hare coursing, allegedly compiled by a member of the Countryside Alliance (CA). The Countryside Alliance is a group pushing for a ban against blood sports to be lifted.

Brian shares the pro-hunting video

The guitarist has decided to share the pro-hunting video with friends and fans – in the hope it will deter people who might vote for Conservative party leader David Cameron in the upcoming elections to be held on May 6th – after the politician said he would let Members of Parliament decide whether the ban should be overturned.

Brian May said, “Maybe there is a better idea. (I want to show it to) anyone who seems to think it would be cool to repeal the Hunting Act… Perhaps it’s worth seeing, to be clear just how low these people can stoop… I have a feeling that, given enough rope, these bloodthirsty varmints will hang themselves.”

The Irish hairdresser Jim Hutton met Freddie Mercury in the early 1980s and their relationship continued until the star’s death from bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS on 24th November 1991.

Jim was diagnosed with the HIV virus in 1990 and passed away on New Year’s Day of complications from broncho-pneumonia. He also reportedly suffered from cancer in the last few years of his life.

He was buried in Bennekerry, Co. Carlow, Ireland on Monday 4th Jan, on the day which would have been his 61st birthday

In 1994, Hutton released a book entitled ‘Mercury and Me’, a memoir of his relationship with Freddie Mercury.
