On Saturday just gone, 29th March 2025, I took part in the Piano Day Waterford event which took place at Luca Records in Waterford, Ireland. If you don’t already know, Piano Day is an annual event celebrated on the 88th day of the year—symbolic of the piano’s 88 keys. Founded by German pianist and composer Nils Frahm in 2015, the event serves as a global tribute to the beauty, versatility, and emotional depth of the instrument. Held in late March, Piano Day unites musicians, composers, and enthusiasts from around the world in a shared love for piano music.
The celebration is marked by a diverse range of performances, collaborations, and special releases. Concerts take place in various settings, from grand concert halls to intimate home studios and public spaces. Musicians of all levels participate, showcasing the universal appeal of the piano. Many artists use the occasion to premiere new compositions or experimental works, adding an innovative edge to the festivities.
Beyond live performances, Piano Day also embraces digital platforms. Online streaming events, live broadcasts, and exclusive album releases allow audiences across the globe to engage with the event, ensuring that the celebration transcends physical boundaries. Record labels, music platforms, and independent artists often curate special playlists or release unique recordings in honor of the day.
This piano-centric Day is not just about music—it also serves a philanthropic purpose. Many events raise funds for music education programs, piano restoration projects, or charitable initiatives supporting access to musical instruments. This aligns with the event’s core mission: to foster creativity and spread the joy of piano music to as many people as possible.
Whether through grand symphonic performances or minimalist solo improvisations, and this celebrating of all things piano highlights the piano’s ability to convey deep emotion and inspire artistic expression. It is a day to celebrate music, innovation, and the timeless magic of the piano.
I have a video of the event, which I will post here in the coming days. So please check back soon, and I will link it via my YouTube Channel.
