Neko Carlow

Neko Carlow

I recently visited Neko Carlow, an Asian restaurant the like of which I have rarely visited in Ireland. I spotted the restaurant on Google Maps as I was traveling from Dublin and wanted to find a restaurant halfway between Dublin and Waterford and Carlow was the ideal option.

Neko is located at 20 Dublin Street in Carlow. The location is on a nice street and late on Sunday evening parking was not a problem. We did not have a reservation but since there were only 2 of us, it was not an issue and we were seated promptly.

The menu looked varied and also looked like the style which I like, a good mix of traditional and fusion meals. The smells from the kitchen and also as meals passed were amazing. We ordered our mains and before we got them, there was an amuse-bouche style dish compliments of the chef.

From the Neko website, it seems the chef takes a lot of pride in the restaurant, “Our head chef believes there are three main facets of running a good restaurant: First is hygiene, second is fresh and healthy food, and third is service. “This is very obvious as the food and the service was phenomenal.  The head chef is Simon Lim, a Malaysian-born chef who comes from a family of cooks. Also, it has to be noted that they do not use MSG here if this is something you like to avoid. Personally, I don’t mind it but I know some people have intolerances to it. They also use 100% Irish Sirloin Beef, 100% Irish Lamb Shank from Clonmore Meats in Wicklow, and Fresh Chicken, Seafood, and Vegetables!

I got the Neko Prawn Black Bean with Noodles and it was just delicious. Not just the food but the way it was presented and served. Totally enjoyed the whole meal, as it was something to be savoured, enjoyed, and remembered. We did get dessert of Churros afterwards and I think it was just to sit and enjoy the lovely surroundings. The interior is beautifully decorated and I am very impressed that such a hidden gem of a restaurant is within an hour’s drive of where I live.

I would recommend making a reservation if you wish to visit Neko. You will not be disappointed. I will be back and next time, I will make a reservation and will try the full 3 courses.  They are open 7 days from 12:30 to about 10 pm, Sundays from 1 pm.

Loko Waterford – Dog Friendly Restaurant Waterford

Loko Waterford – Dog Friendly Restaurant Waterford

Loko Waterford, Restaurant Review: Dog-Friendly Restaurant, Waterford

Loko Waterford is located on the Dunmore Road about 10 minutes from Waterford city centre in Ireland. The restaurant is located on the same retail park as Ardkeen Quality Food Stores. Loko is quite a large restaurant which spans over three floors. The decor is very trendy indeed with lots of quirky and interesting items decorating everything from the ceiling to the lampshades. You will also find some great pieces of art hanging on the walls.

I had been to Loko a few times before but I recently heard that they allowed dogs. With the recent change of legislation in Ireland, more and more restaurants are allowing dogs inside. As a dog owner, this is great as there is no more having to leave the dog at home, eat in the freezing cold in the outside area of a restaurant or just having to eat a take away in the car (all because a restaurant won’t take a dog … well done to Loko on that stroke of genius). Some restaurants treat you as if you wanted to bring your pet rat inside … those restaurants need to change with the times! Some restaurants say ‘we are dog friendly’ and then put you in a covered outdoor area but Loko actually bring you inside.

Booking a Dog-Friendly Table at Loko

So we booked a table for 2 humans and one dog. On arrival, we were greeted and shown to the doggy friendly area downstairs. We were given a water bowl for the dog and menus. You will find lots on the menu for you to enjoy. I do like seafood, and there is normally quite a selection on their menu. On this occasion, we had the monkfish scampi and the roast chicken. The Roast Chicken was superb as it came on a bed of mash, with onion gravy and large dumpling style balls of delicious stuffing. The scampi was light and perfectly cooked with a really crunchy panko style coating.

During the meal, the owner came down to see if our dog would like to try some doggy beer. “Bottom Sniffer” is an alcohol-free, non-carbonated doggy beer. Apparently, the label says that it is the ultimate doggy refreshment which will help make your dog the leader of the pack and will have other dogs sniffing their bottoms with jealousy! (a marketing text which would work for this beer but probably would not work for Budweiser)

Of course, we enjoyed dessert afterwards, Bread and Butter Pudding and a brownie as far as I recall.

Loko is a very trendy and very enjoyable place to eat, with a menu which will suit almost every diner and welcomes everyone, including the canine members of the family. We really enjoyed our meal and we will certainly be back again soon.

The only thing is that the portions are on the larger side and for me, I would need to be hungry, even for some of the brunch items. (but hey, that’s just me)

On other occasions I have also enjoyed the PoBoy Seafood Baguette, the Sting Onion Rings and also the most amazing cinnamon rolls with icing that you have ever tried in your life. The staff are very friendly and there is a lot to enjoy and savour at Loko Restaurant Waterford.

360 Cookhouse: Dog-Friendly Restaurant Dungarvan, Co. Waterford – Restaurant Review

One of the hardest things in Ireland to find is a dog-friendly restaurant. Unlike in the UK, most Irish restaurants will not allow a dog to enter its premises.

We are very lucky and Waterford to have two restaurants who except dogs, namely, Loko and 360 Cookhouse in Dungarvan.

I spotted the sign for the dog-friendly menu at 360 Cookhouse on a recent walk around Dungarvan and I made it my business to try it out.

Our Dog-Friendly Restaurant Booking

On arrival, we had a very friendly welcome into the restaurant and we had a spot for the dog who was very comfortable also.

360 Cookhouse is not just a pet-friendly restaurant but was Awarded Pet–Friendly Destination of the year 2019 from the Georgiana Campbell Ireland Guide! High praise indeed. You can also share your pet photos while you are here with their hashtag #Dogsof360.

The 360 Cookhouse menu is vast and is very varied. I could have tried a number of options from it but in the end, I chose the homemade fish fingers with came with fries and salad.

The fish fingers were chunky and made of the best white flaky fish all perfectly cooked and coated in a buttercream Panko crumb. The salad was perfect and had a pickled edge to it which contrasted the fish very well. The accompanying fries were homemade skin-on fries and doused in a good amount of sea salt. This main was absolutely delicious.

We were tempted to review the dessert menu and were drawn to a Crunchie Chocolate Moose which I had not ever tried before (Perhaps a 360Cookhouse signature recipe?). This was the lightest fluffiest moose topped with crushed pieces of Cadbury Crunchie and raspberries. An astonishing end to a great meal.

I later found out that a tapas menu is also available. I saw a few people enjoying that election and it looked ver tempting indeed. That option will have to be tried on return.

We also had 2 coffees and tea and the whole bill was less than €50 which was excellent value. Plus dog-friendly… did I mention that already ???

I’m delighted to see that dog owners are being considered when it comes to allowing dogs to enter. I can tell you that the restaurants which take dogs will be getting more of my business than the ones who don’t. I saw one sign in a restaurant which said “Dogs and Well Behaved Children are Welcome here” and I agree with that sentiment.

If you are in Dungarvan I totally recommend you visit 360 Cookhouse. Great staff, great menu, great food, great desserts, great value and dog-friendly – that’s 6 stars out of 5 ! (Extra Star for the dog-friendly attitude!)

We are already planning our next visit to 360 Cookhouse. Next time with friends and dog also of course!

Eastenders Indian Restaurant, Waterford – Restaurant Review

Eastenders Indian Restaurant, Waterford – Restaurant Review

Eastenders Indian Restaurant – Authentic Indian Restaurant situated on the Quay in Waterford, Ireland

Eastenders Indian Restaurant situated near the bridge in Waterford (South East of Ireland) is one of my regular eateries and always provides an excellent and authentic Indian cuisine experience.

I have a few criteria whenever I quote that a restaurant is an ‘excellent restaurant’.
Firstly I’m looking for comfortable surroundings, good service, interesting menu, food displaying the skills of an excellent chef. I also look for good presentation of the food and consistency of enjoyment (i.e. over repeat visits all of the above points are always in place).

The Indian starters here in Eastenders are very good. My favourites are Onion Bhaji, chrum fry (mushrooms) or the aloo pakora (potato). They also have a great selection of main courses (all using secret chef’s recipes). Some recommended mains  are the Chicken Korma which is mild and creamy, the Lamb Tikka Masala and the Chicken Rizalla (which includes a boiled egg in the sauce!).

I have always had good food and good service here at Eastenders, for take away or dine-in. Take Away orders are usually ready in 15-20 mins and it is always piping hot. I used to live around the corner from the Eastenders Restaurant and every two or three weeks I would get a takeaway from here. We were never disappointed – there were once or twice I felt that there was a bit too much sauce but apart from that I have enjoyed the food there.

Another plus in my book, is the Indian Music playing in the background. It really annoys me when I go to a Chinese or Indian Restaurant and Boyzone or Mariah Carey are on in the background. I am looking for the cultural experience, so the music of that country should be played.

A Buffet Indian Lunch is served on Sundays from about midday.

Prices are very reasonable and mains start from about €9.

This is an old review of the Eastenders Indian Restaurant in Waterford and my review was accurate at that time (March 2012). I have not been there since but if I am I will update this review to reflect my thoughts. I have not been sponsored or paid to review this restaurant and my opinion is my own and based on service and food at the time of my visit.

Pa Pa Thai, Waterford : Thai /Asian Restaurant Review

Pa Pa Thai is an excellent Thai restaurant in Waterford

Authentic Thai decor, a fantastic menu, and great service.

If you are in Waterford and you are looking for a good Asian or Thai Restaurant, check out Pa Pa Thai, located near the Peoples Park in Waterford.

Pa Pa Thai is one of my regular restaurants in Waterford … The service is also excellent and the food is excellent.
The Lunch is €13.95 for a starter, main, sides and tea/coffee or you can simply choose a main with side dish from €8.50.
The Early Bird menu has more to offer with a varied selection of starters, dinner, rice/chips/noodles, dessert and tea/coffee at €19.95.

The A La Carte menu offers a wide choice but my recommendations are…

Starters

Try the Mixed Starter which is a selection of delicious starters & sauces.

Main Courses

  • Pad Neau Nam Manboi (in Oyster Sauce) : (Mild) – Chicken or beef stir-fried with oyster sauce, onions, mushrooms & seasonal vegetables
  • Gaeng Khew Wan (Thai Green Curry): A wonderfully flavoured, little spice, made with coconut milk, red curry paste, aromatic herbs & fresh vegetables with your choice of meat
  • Masaman Curry (Potato & Cashew Nut Curry): This full flavoured but mild curry is bursting with delicious flavours such as nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, cardamon, cumin & coconut milk with your choice of meat
  • Yum Neau (Beef Salad): Slices of tender beef mixed with onion, tomato, cucumber, lemon grass, coriander & mint, together with a zesty dressing & served on a bed of lettuce – I find this option very refreshing!
  • Seau Rawng Hai (Weeping Tiger Steak): Sirloin steak sliced & served on a sizzling platter with homemade sauce made from soy sauce, palm sugar, coriander & garlic – has to be tried as it is excellent!

It is rare for a restaurant to have so many good options on the menu, in Pa Pa Thai it is often difficult to choose from the great menu choices; Pa Pa is a consistently good restaurant.

Whatever you choose from the menu, you can be guaranteed that it will be good. Enjoy!

Imperial Gardens, Chinese Restaurant, Cork Road, Waterford – Restaurant Review

Imperial Gardens, Chinese Restaurant, Cork Road, Waterford – Restaurant Review

The Imperial Gardens Chinese Restaurant Waterford

An authentic Chinese Restaurant, with a very well decorated interior, great service and a very varied and tasty menu.

The Imperial Gardens Waterford is a restaurant I regularly visit as it offers an unrivalled selection of Chinese food prepared in what is claimed is “the biggest Chinese food kitchen in Waterford”, … and I’d believe it.

Imperial Gardens, Cork Road, Waterford - Restaurant Review

Early bird special offers are excellent value, which is 4 courses for only €18.50. Some of the specialities include traditional Chinese dumplings or Crispy Wan Tan for starters and dishes such as Roast Duck with Ginger and Spring Onion or the Special Seafood Selection with Noodles. These dishes are perfectly cooked and taste great. Also on Sundays, there is an all you can eat buffet which is excellent value for money.

Portions are very decent but not so large that if you eat everything you are not overly full. The staff are very friendly and give you plenty of time between courses to relax while still maintaining a good flow to the service. It’s also good to see that they stock some more unusual drinks including an Aloe Vera drink which is very refreshing and if you haven’t tried it, give it a go.

The traditional Chinese decor is very nice and they often play Chinese Pop Music which is always a plus in my book (I believe that if you visit a Chinese or Indian Restaurant, Traditional music really adds to the atmosphere)

The restaurant is not centrally located but parking is available nearby and is validated for you before you leave. (don’t forget to ask!)
